PRINTS

For many years I used traditional black and white film and mostly medium format cameras. All prints were made in my darkroom, mostly on baryta papers. The complexity of lith printing also became a fascination.

Later, the darkroom was disbanded but I continued using my film cameras. After developing the films, I made scans and played on the computer with what I had got.

Eventually, as well as scanned film, I created a fully digital option by bringing in a digital camera. This has persuaded me to use the full colour spectrum for nearly all new work, whether for prints or the web.

I find many digital papers have exemplary qualities. They have a good range of weights and finishes from which to make a selection. The editing process offers a vast array of adjustments. The tonal range for black and white, digital prints is vast. However, for me, prints made in the darkroom on the very best siver gelatine papers cannot be matched. This is because of their uniquely rich textures and vivid depths of the blacks.

Most pictures sold from this site are digital fine art prints made with high quality, archival papers and inks. Silver gelatine prints of some images are also available. They were created in my darkroom and given protective toning. When cared for properly, longevity for all prints can be predicted in hundreds of years.

Caring for prints

Certain conditions need to be avoided as they have been known to degrade even the most stable photographs. Keep prints out of strong, direct sunlight and avoid hanging on walls or keeping in rooms known to suffer from dampness. Rapid or very high fluctuations in temperature are also far from ideal. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are found in many household products, particularly certain paints and could induce staining or discolouration. When using products containing VOCs, remove the prints from the vicinity at least until fumes are no longer detectable.
